Corylus colurna Tree

Corylus colurna is a majestic tree that reveals many features throughout the year and is popular with wildlife, especially squirrels. In the spring, long yellow catkins appear and are followed by edible hazelnuts that have a decorative, fringed husk. Oval green leaves have a toothed or serrated edge and in the autumn they turns striking yellow, before falling. Another interesting feature is the bark that becomes corky and corrugated with age and can sometimes peel.

Known as the Turkish Hazel or Constantinople hazel, this tree will grow to 6 x 4 meters in 20 years. With a conical, upright shape when young, it becomes a symmetrical pyramidal shape as it matures. The branches seem to sweep upwards adding to its striking architectural interest. Corylus colurna will tolerate most positions as long as the soil is moist but well-drained and there is at least partial sun.  This hardy nut tree can withstand exposed, cold positions.
